Disney’s Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker is the final entry in the Skywalker Saga, the core films of the Star Wars franchise. The saga kicked off with George Lucas’ 1977 film starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Peter Cushing, and Alec Guinness. The hit space opera was followed by two direct sequels, and a prequel trilogy and a sequel trilogy were added in the decades that followed.

Star Wars focused on a civil war that took place “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.” At the center of the story was young Luke Skywalker, a moisture farmer from Tatooine. After learning the truth about Jedi Knights from Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke found himself thrown into the middle of the conflict between the Republic and the Empire. The narrative was then expanded with a prequel trilogy that followed Luke’s father, Anakin, and his transition into Darth Vader. To close out the Skywalker Saga, Lucasfilm shifted focus to the events following the original trilogy, interweaving the journeys of Luke and Leia with a new era of rebels: Rey, Finn, and Poe.

The Skywalker Saga will officially end with the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The film will serve as the ninth installment of the saga, and the eleventh feature film in the Star Wars franchise.
