It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is a show filled with insane characters. When it comes to the main gang from Paddy’s Pub, they are a rude, insensitive and dangerous group of people who somehow have far too high of an opinion about themselves. Mac (aka Ronald MacDonald) might be the worst offender.
In the classic episode, “The Gang Solves the Gas Crisis”, Mac names himself as the brains of the group. While none of these people are particularly smart, Mac has proven he’s exceptionally dim-witted despite what he might think about himself. Take a look at some quotes from some of Mac’s “finer” moments and see why he is definitely not the brains of Paddy’s Pub.
I’m that character from Lord of the Rings – Vijo Morgenstein.
Couples costumes can be a tricky thing to pull off, especially when one half of the couple chooses a new costume. That was the dilemma Dennis faced when he was dressed up as Luigi and Mac showed up, not as Mario, but as Aragorn from Lord of the Rings.
Aragorn is certainly not a bad choice for a costume, but Mac seems to only have a slight idea who the character actually is. In fact, he seems to have a misguided concept of movies in general as he thinks the actor playing Aragorn is the characters name, and even then he butchers Viggo Mortensen’s name. To be fair, it is a tough name.
Science is a liar sometimes.
Mac is not someone who is weighed down by facts or science. Being a strict Catholic, most of what he believes in comes from his misguided interpretation of the bible, which he doesn’t seem to have actually read. So when it comes to a debate about whether evolution is real, the fact that science supports evolution means nothing to him.
In a hilariously frustrating explanation, which too closely follows the debate style of some prominent politicians, Mac takes science’s most famous minds to task. Centuries of proven facts are thrown out the window as Mac uses his childish logic to “prove” evolution wrong.
That’s what grenades do?!
Some of the best humor in It’s Always Sunny comes from the show picking apart cliches and tropes from television and movies. When Mac and Charlie are trying to fake their own death, they go through a variety of insane lengths to make it a convincing demise, including acquiring a grenade.
Mac seems like the kind of guy who watches too many action movies and takes them as fact. So of course he’s letdown by seeing what an actual grenade does which is surprisingly little damage.
Fight Milk! The first alcoholic dairy based protein drink for bodyguards!
Owning a pub might be the only thing Mac is capable of doing (though he’s not very capable of even that), but he has always had far greater dreams for himself. For some reason, his dream job is to be a bodyguard and evidently, he seems to think that is a dream shared by many people.
One of Mac’s get-rich-quick schemes is a milk-based energy drink called Fight Milk which is specifically designed for bodyguards. Aside from the fact that the drink itself sound disgusting, thinking he can market it solely to bodyguards shows how successful Mac would be as a businessman.
I browned out that evening.
Heavy drinking seems to be a regular pastime for the gang at Paddy’s, to the point where they regularly don’t remember all the insane things they’ve done the night before. However, in this one particular instance, Mac didn’t fully black out from drinking, but only partially recalls the night’s events. This leads to the creation of a new term.
To have the need of a phrase describing your partial alcohol-induced memory loss probably would indicate a drink problem. But while Mac isn’t smart enough to realize that, it is an admittedly useful term.
Oh, I get it. Cute. You leave this pen here and people are supposed to think, “Wait, that looks like a d**k.”
The gang at Paddy’s Pub has a lot of hidden skeletons in their respective closets. Charlie won’t admit he doesn’t know how to read or write. Dennis is a sociopath. And for much of the show, make was a closeted gay man. The only problem is that the gang doesn’t care about Mac’s sexuality, and it’s his own personal struggle that kept it a secret.
Mac being Mac, he’s not very good at hiding the fact that he’s gay. Despite his best efforts, he often and blatantly reveals his homosexuality. When meeting with a psychiatrist, Mac becomes hypnotized by a pen that is convinced looks like a penis. A psychiatrist could really have a lot of fun with him.
Yeah, I did an ocular pat-down and I cleared him.
Mac certainly isn’t the only member of the gang to have an inflated idea of his own worth, but his might be the most pathetic. Not satisfied with being the owner and operator of the pub, Mac instead wants to be head of security and names himself as Sheriff of Paddy’s.
That, of course, is a ridiculous title but Mac lives in a world of delusion where he thinks he’s some kind of super cop despite having zero training in any area related to this. He even thinks that he can access threats with his own visual scan like Robocop.
Smoke some cigarettes. The smoke will suffocate the bacteria in your stomach.
Mac and Dennis have a very strange and uncomfortable relationship with one another. Mac is obviously in love with Dennis, while Dennis sometimes seems to hate Mac and regularly abuses him. Yet they also look out for each other in appropriately messed up ways.
Convinced by Mac apple seeds are poisonous, Dennis freaks out after accidentally eating one. Mac’s solution to the problem is probably not doctor approved, it is nice that he cares enough to give such terrible advice.
That doesn’t sound right, but I don’t know enough about stars to dispute it.
Charlie is without a doubt the most simple-minded member of the Paddy’s Pub gang, and that’s saying a lot. He has an adolescent understanding of the world around him and seems to live in his own fantasy world most of the time. Luckily, he’s surrounded by other idiots so his stupidity isn’t always noticed.
When Charlie tries to make Paddy’s more green, he explains his process of recycling garbage by burning it so that the smoke can go up into the sky and create stars. Mac seemed to have missed that day in science class as well because he can neither confirm nor deny those facts.
I’m not fat. I’m cultivating mass.
An ongoing joke with Mac is his obsession with achieving the perfect body and exercising. Despite his constant talk about perfecting his body, he doesn’t seem to put much effort into it. This all leads to the hilarious reveal of Fat Mac in Season 7.
After trying to “cultivate mass” to then sculpt a chiseled body, Mac becomes an obese slob. It’s all made funnier by the fact that actor Rob McElhenney actually gained 50 pounds for the season. Even with an enormous gut hanging out, Mac refuses to acknowledge that he’s overweight.
